What is the Discord upload limit for GIFs?

The same as for any file, 10 MB without Nitro as of 2026, more with Nitro or on boosted servers. Limits change, so adjust the target if you know yours.

Why does a GIF link work when the upload does not?

A link is not an upload. Discord embeds a GIF hosted elsewhere without counting its size, but pasting a link needs a host. Uploading a small enough file is simpler and keeps the GIF in the chat.

Should I post an MP4 instead?

If the clip came from a video, yes. Discord plays MP4 inline and it is far smaller than a GIF of the same clip. Use the video compressor for that. This page is for GIFs you already have.

Do you upload my GIF?

Will the GIF still look sharp?

Reusing unchanged pixels costs nothing in quality. If the target needs fewer colors or a smaller width, the preview shows the result before you export, and a lower frame rate is often the least visible change for a short loop.
